I haven't heard of anyone trying it, but one would think in 2018 we could rig up a back up camera to have a nice view of the tree...

Don't tell NHRA about that idea, they would assume the camera would be set to sense the yellow, then release the button on a pre-programmed delay. (not that anyone would ever try such a thing...)

    You wouldn't need it for a NHRA/PDRA race... outlaw tracks/races wouldn't care

Can you do a live view with a Go Pro and a small tablet or smart phone? As long as there is no connectivity to your vehicle control systems I can't see how anyone could balk at the idea?

Now here's a thought...... I wonder what the cumulative time delay factor would be for the path of camera/processing/communication/human reaction/vehicle motion?

I doubt you could use a camera and display with anything but state of the art technology. Typical Screen update rates are 30-60 hs (.015 - .03 potential delay). I've never seen a live display with less than tenths of a second delay. Not that it couldn't be done, but I wouldn't expect it to be easy.

Now a light sensor driving a solid state relay hooked to an led inside the car would probably be fast enough. But if you're going to that trouble, just skip the light bulb and go straight to the transbrake or clutch solenoid

I agree with Bjs. The delay would spell disaster.

    Get a dragster haha.

Prisms (back window things for RV's/vans) seem to be popular here

A few screw cars here in Australia have difficulty seeing the tree. I had a truck mirror mounted on the far windscreen bar. The trouble is setting the angle. In the end I mounted a solid cable with a T handle near the shifter so I could adjust it just going into stage. Others caught on and put the cable in too.
