I am looking at put together top alcohol dragster. My question is on the nitro dragster do they run a high gear only, or do they have a transmission.

    A/ Fuel

Hi, I am not an expert on A/fuel (Injected nitro) cars but I have seen a lot of them and everyone I have ever seen is direct drive.

The big differences between the A/Fuel cars and Blown alcohol are generally the following

    A/Fuel Blown alcohol
Rear wing: Dual element Single element
Rear axle: 10.5" or bigger (Not all but most) 9.5" (Mostly)
Transmission: Direct drive 3 spd (1/4 mile)
    Ignition: Dual mags Single
Wheel base: 292" or longer 288" or shorter (Generally)
    Wheels: Bead locks Liner type

Engine setbacks are different, I would imagine fuel tanks are different, and of coarse its injected on nitro with no blower vs. the screw blower on alcohol.

Hope this helps but I am sure there are many a/fuel guys on here that can give your more specifics.

    Best wishes,
    Trevor Sherwood

When you say direct drive do you mean high gear only, or is it a 3 speed. When I watch this dragster run they appear to leave at a idle compared to the blown dragsters.

For clarity, why the difference in wheel types?

I don't have an answer for the dragsters.....but in the Funny Car and Altered chassis cars the alcohol guys seem to all run liner type wheels and the nitro guys use bead locks....when I had the alky setup with converter the liner wheels seemed less prone to tire shake....i just watched the sportsman coverage on TAFC and noticed that 90% of the cars had liners so monkey see....monkey do for me...now with Nostalgia Nitro it's back to bead locks and we can change 'em ourselves....

    A/Fuel

We've ran A/Fuel for 5 yrs, so I can toss a few answers your way.
Yes, we run direct drive, after the 4 disc clutch.
yes, we leave at an idle, at full stage approx. 2200 rpm, and at the hit the clutch set-up allows the rpm to climb to approx. 5000 rpm in a split second, and it maintains that rpm (+/-) as we slip the clutch for about 3 seconds into the run, where then we'd like to see lock-up, and then the rpm climbs linear to wheel speed (or vise-versa) , topping out at about 6500 thru the eyes.
my question to you is: are you on the fence deciding between BAD or A/Fuel?

Must be nice to have that much fuel pump (RPM). Us Nostalgia A/F (injected nitro) deals only get a 11.7 pump and need a little bit more rpm. :)

    lotsa fuel

Ya, we wouldn't get very far without our 44 pump...using up to 28 during most of the run... but there are a lot of cool things about a N A/F; watched them several times with envy!

We just acquired a set of AJ Muscle Heads from one of your competitors. Man,...you guys run nozzles everywhere. If we ran that many nozzles we'd have a drip system. It is a fun challenge for sure.

    Blessings.......Ron

No cannon or management, just a centrifugal glide. If they had management they would probably be in the 4’s.
