Msd 44 mag will not fire

    I have a top dragster and I just put a bae in with a 44 mag msd points box and coil with MSD shut off solenoid. I have a self-starter with 16 V battery cranks 300 rpm's with the blower on if I pull the belt off it would crank 500 rpm still no spark. The next thing I did was pulled the mag off with it still wired up and spun it with a drill really slow and would get spark but as soon as I put it on the car it will not spark it makes no sense to me

    Is this on crank trigger if it is your not spinning it fast enough

    Is the rotor turning the correct way? CCW? Is the mag a Chevy turning mag or Hemi?

    Also 1 16 volt battery will not be enough juice to spin a supercharged engine over. It take 24-36 volts to spin quick enough.

    Yes it turning the correct way for the hemi I have a Meziere 10 Pitch starter

    Which points box? With a chip or no chip?

    I disagree. Single 16V battery works fine for me. Just start on the mag and flip to trigger once it's idling on its own.

    You have spark when turning the mag with a drill then you should have spark when it's on the motor. Have you checked your mag drive?

    Yea I have checked all that I'm thinking my starters hanging up I hooked it up to 24 V and it actually slow down

    I don't have so much experience but..

    Are you sure about the connection of the coil?
    It seems to me you are grounding the + of the generator. When it is in the motor it's grounded through the shaft, when you spin it with the drill it it isn't.
    Check the polarity of the wirings on the coil.

    I have the mag 4 pin connector plugged in the points box then the red wire from the points box to the + of the coil then the lack wire of the points box to the - of the coil the the other post of the coil going to ground of the chassis I have tried a different mag points box and coil i have unhooked the kill sol still nothing now if I pull the blower belt of and the spark plugs out I can get spark I'm sending my starter in and get it checked out

    A 44 has to crank fast or it will never fire , 16V will have a hart time getting the cranking speed to start it . If you have a good starter you won't hurt it to hook the cranking up to 24v or 36v and try it we ran a chevy 12v starter for years on 36v and never killed it, it turn fast enough you were not cranking more than 2 or 3 sec

    You didn't mention the bridge that connects the 2 negative terminals in the coil but I believe you have it (ground of the point box/magneto to the ground of the chassis)

    It could be really the low cranking RPM because the generator spins at half the speed of the crank...so maybe the drill spins it slower than the cranking RPM but more than 1/2 of it and it is enough.
    Msd speaks about 200-250rpm (at the crank) in their sheets.

    weak starter probably the issue. like I said though, 16V system is plenty to start on the mag. when/if you decide to use a trigger you'll need a cross over switch or a 24-36v system. be sure to ground everything well. I didn't see anything mentioned about grounding head to head to coil, you'll want to do that also.

    put a tilton 3hp on it with 24volts and you can fire it up on the crank trigger.There are starter brands that only worked fine till 16v and don't like more.If you have the mag,point box and coil connected correctly and you put a plug to the chassis ground on the coil wire,crank with out plugs it needs to spark.
