Auto cooler help

    Anyone have blue prints how to build a converter drive cooler. Pros or cons to ones you can buy. Should I look for used one?

    I have made one that is mounted permanently on the trailer. It is an old cooler unit from a crane with air/air cooler, pump, motor in one unit. The lines are plumbed on the trailer with quick disconnects so I can hook the hoses on the trailer and the transmission and flip a switch.

    It takes about 15-20 mins to cool the trans and converter to just above ambient temp.

    We use one sold by Mick Synder at Synder Motorsports. It is a wheeled ice chest with a handle and attached to the outside is a 115volt pump and has a transmission cooler inside. We fill it with water and ice. The hoses have Jiffy Connectors on the end. It works very well and is simple and reliable.

    Mike, what's the fluid temp after "x" amount of time that you normally let the cooler run? I'm familiar with the unit that Mick sells, just seems like it would chill the fluid too much. Do you control fluid temp with cooling time or the amount of ice/water you put in the cooler?

    Never have timed it or measured the temps. We grab hold of the line coming from the Bruno unit and when it feels like ambient temperature we disconnect it. Usually by the time we run again it has probably totally settled down to ambient temps. We use that RedLine racing light weight ATF which is a synthetic fluid so that is pretty stable on viscosity.

    Saw quite a few Kool Solutions coolers at PDRA last weekend. Give it a Google.

    we built one for the top dragster. We bought a hot oil gear pump off amazon, and put 3 jegs trans coolers (with fins) in an ice chest. plumbed with an inline filter to clean as it cools. We recently tapped into the converter charge port on the lencodrive and it gets the drive and converter cool very quick.

    in top dragster it is not uncommon to only have 18-20 minutes back at the pit and we can usually get the trans fluid back down to 110 in that time frame.

    Would it be possible to provide a link to which pump you're using? When you do a search for hot oil gear pump you get such a variety, and I'm sure a lot of them will work, but I'd rather go with one that I know is proven to work.

    Cooler Photos

    I would like to take credit for this design, but the original idea was from Bruce & Jared Micetich - Advance Transmission in Knoxville, Iowa - they designed this Lencodrive cooler and modified my valve body & case to accept quick disconnect dry-loc fittings....It flushes the fluid back through the converter and cools the trans to ambient temp withing a few minutes....it's 12 volt so ya gotta charge the battery between rounds....

    I just built this one similar to theirs and it works great!

    Why 12 volt? Can’t I use a 110 pump and do same thing? Just seems like a real pain in ass for if you forget to charge it

    Qwikest/easiest way to get the ball rolling on a pump that is a "KNOWN QUANTITY"
    You use the:

    Grainger pn#
    4UN25
    1/2hp
    For your ACTUAL Cooler pump

    Tony @ Q/D sold
    that pump p.n.# when he built them as i recall.

    Yes," plastic coolers are for soda & beer" lol

    & $2400 is for either your pocket, or someone elses,
