well I got my tuning figured out last year but this season I decided to put a bigger roller cam in and raise the boost. The truck has been idling fine and throttle response is great. but today we were taking it out of the shop and flames started shooting out of the exhaust and it started "popping". We shut it off for few and fired it back up and stopped but I got around the corner and it did it again. It did it out of both sides at different times. I set the leakage at 83% and I have a 125 pill in it. The hat has 42s in it and the ports have 36-34-32-30 in them. Last year I had the same in the hat and ports but it had a 145 pill. Am I too rich or too lean? I think I'm lean cause the exhaust seems hotter this year.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Engine specs:

    557 ford
    Blue Thunder B heads
    .744 lift roller cam
    110 pump
    Alky
    Buzzard catcher w/ k valve
    11.27:1 CR
    14-71 Littlefield
    About 14lbs of boost
    28 degrees timing

If you have flame out the exhaust and all the symptoms you describe then I believe you should check your ignition timing. It sounds like it is way retarded. Either your timing pointer has moved so you are not really where you think you are or you are on the wrong side of TDC

Sounds to me that your nozzles are too small to start with. How many 42's in the hat and blower? A smaller pill is not going to richen it enough with a boost increase. I'd suggest 6 55's in the hat and 50 in each port as a start to getting the tune right. Ever thought about sending your system to a qualified shop to have it flowed and get a baseline?

I have 8 42's in the hat. I will order some .048 which should be very close to 6 55's. I will get an assortment for the ports.

To be honest...no not really. I try to learn as much as I can as fast as I can.

I forgot to ask what version of the 110 pump you have. A standard 110? 110 990? 110 1100? Also. do you know what fuel pressure you are running? If you idle around and run it "part throttle" quite a bit, you may need a LOT richer low rpm nozzle arrangement. Larger than normal nozzles and a pressure relief set lower than a lot of racers use my help your engine at part throttle use. In drag racing my engine is either idle or WOT. Another .02 Keep the change.

Fire out the pipes is almost always retarded timing. The fuel is firing in the pipes. You can't get it lean enough to make it fire out of the pipes with normal timing. If it is rich with the right timing, it will just be wet pipes.

Thanks guys. Come to find out I didn't have enough timing. Tuned her into 34 degrees and she runs great.
