I've noticed a growing trend of rods cracking around the bolt holes and I'm wondering if any one is making rods with a thru bolt and nut instead of the standard cap screw arrangement?

I dont know if any company is doing it now, GRP was talking about it and researching it. Dont think anything came of it.

It seems to me that the rods themselves haven't kept up with the rod bolts, maybe the heat treating or forging process is leaving them too brittle to handle the load and distortion in the thin areas around the bolt hole. I'm interested to hear other peoples thoughts.

We've just done 16 runs with GRP rod without any issues and we're going to put a new set in now even though they measure up like new. I don't want to point fingers but we have had 2 rods from different manufacturers fail around the bolt holes, 1 only had 5 passes on it and I know of 3 other racers who have had the same issue 2 caught it early 1 lost a block on the jack stands. Like I said, different brands with good reputations both billet and forged.

I have known and had customers that went though the same thing. Most of them switched to GRP with no issues to recur.

We use Mgp rods and never had an issue. I've used rnr rods and had good luck when the motor made 2200 hp or so. Over that , well.... I use Mgp now.

Can somebody give more explanation to the original post's statement on a "Growing Trend". I have never seen it or heard of the problem. I don't think I am in the dark as to other cars. How many racers have experienced this? What brand rods are doing it? Is it one particular class?

Mike I have sent you an email with some pics.

The more I think about it it seems to be more in the forged rods than the billets.

Yes, thanks for the pictures. I can tell you that I have never seen this with GRP rods and Proxtreme guys push their motors pretty hard. Personnenlly I see so much success with GRP rods with Promods that I would never use anything else.

The only rods I know of that are forged are BME and CP Carillo. Thought I was going to have to switch to Forged. Now Canter has me re thinking my position. Grp needs to send you a referral fee Mike lol.

Lol, you can't argue with success. If something is working then you don't change. Also GRP rods are not forged but cut out of a "sheet" of aluminum.

Grp is the only way to go. Never really known anyone to have a problem that was truely self inflicted and lets be honest most will never admit that.
