Looking into all sorts of weight loss ideas, any pros or cons to using titanium bolts to replace the 1/2 lower front control arm bolts and 3/8 motor plate bolts?

    TIA

    titanium blots

unless u weight 2400 lbs u do not need to go titanium bolts
their is plenty of other thing u can do to drop 50 to 150 lbs

write a list of all things and a realistic weight loss realistic time to make the change, and cost
    example
not saying this is true just a guess

item , cost after selling the old , time , weight loss

    oil filter inline 100-200 2 hrs 5lbs

    fiberglass body 5000 30hrs 75lbs

    carbon body 10000 30hrs 85lbs

    light carbon 15000 30 hrs 95lbs

    titanium/carbon tunnel 1000 10 hrs 10 lbs

    remove battery 100 1 hrs 40lbs

    smaller fuel cell 300 2 hrs 25lbs

    remove tranny cooler 300 2 hrs 10lbs

    titanium blots 1000-2000 10 hrs 10lbs

moly wheelie bars single kit 1000 10 hrs 10 lbs

    carbon bars 5000 2 hrs 20 lbs

then make your own list and decide what you want to do 1st to loos most weight

don't for get ris factor of a part failing

    Bolts

    Hi Scott,

I realize its a pro mod but when I spoke with Brad Hadman he said he absolutely does not recomend titanium bolts on a-arms because if it ever sets the front end down hard it can crack them and then they are an unseen time bomb. Think of the damage if they break during a run.... Also a friend put all ti bolts in his dragster and he said afterwards for the weight saved it wasn't worth it. Maybe the bigger bolts would be worth it in the end but like Chris said there are many other areas that are better to get the weight down and are more cost effective.

On my dragster I am taking an approach like this, as I am assembling it I look at each item and say can I make it lighter or simpler. Often overlooked items will surprise you. I had to make a new fuel cell hold down and just saved 2 lbs by making a nicer one out of a thinner scalloped aluminum and by cutting two additional lightening holes in the sides. Aluminum dzus fasteners is another area to save weight. Pocket milling engine plates can save weight, carbon body and panels, lighter rear wheels, ect....Chris (above this post) just went through all this twice and can probably give you a better idea for pro mod specific stuff but I would save the bolts for last unless they are huge like the 3/4" Bellhousing bolts.

    Best wishes,
    Trevor Sherwood

Thanks for the replies. I may get a few bolts for less critical areas, and then "front to back" the car looking at screws, washers and every little piece. I have small batteries sitting in the garage. That's a big and easy weight reduction.

I rebolted my pro mod car with titanium bolts everywhere except 4 link, aluminum nuts here and there.... saved only 5 lbs , was a lot of work and money.

I think some thinner lexan side window and a couple of carbon fiber parts too.

    Weight

    Like Shawn said...5 lbs.....lots of $$$$

Carbon would be a better bang for the buck, also magnesium engine plates I hear are all the rage in ADRL cars but you may want to dbl check that.

Jim Kyle is a good friend of mine and has a former ADRL car and he is also good with weight. Call him at 931-580-8804 and tell him Trevor told you to call, he is very helpful.

    Best wishes bud,

6 foot 2, 205, 34 inch waist an bench 250. I'd have to start cutting off body parts ;-)

"That cost me an arm and a leg ;-)"
