Blasting a chromoly chassis

    Whats the best way to clean up a chassis thats been sitting around for a couple of years, Its got a bit of light surface rust corrison started to build up on it, Garnet blasting, Soda Blasting ?

    I just did one, I bought a chassis that was sitting around for years looked bad in the pics but when I got it 4 hrs later with a few 3m scotch bright pads, it looked brand new!

    You can also take a wheel acid cleaner and spray it on. Scotch brite it and them rinse with water. Take tranny fluid and scotch brite it in to the metal and wipe off. It should last all summer long. I do that to my wheelie bars and they look awesome all year.

    If I remember correctly , sprint car rules don't allow blasting because it tempers the metal and makes it brittle .
    I would use scotch brite and WD-40 and not risk it.

    We soda blasted ours, pipes came out like brand new, you could even read the moly spec printed on the bars,

    Chassis

    Hi,

    I just went through all of this and everyone told me to avoid sand blasting, they said use either walnut shells or plastic, you can use soda to but you have to neutralize the acid real good after. The reason why they don't use sand or other materials is because it leaves tiny pits in the metal which can be seen in the sunlight. It also weakens and thins out the metal. I had a sample piece walnut blasted and I can tell you that I couldn't see the difference between that or the piece that he media blasted and neither looked like a normal moly tube after, they looked as though they needed to be painted. He also tried to rip me off with a $900 quote for the walnut shell deal. I just used aircraft stripper to get the paint off and then there are two different grits of scotchbrite with wd-40 I used, one was a little more coarse to help with some slightly rusty spots. When I was done I wiped all of it off and then wiped the whole thing down with a can of prism gel and a rag, wella...as good as it can be.
