    Hi,

I read on here a while back that one of the brands of ring and pinion gears had a better service life than the other but I cannot find the posting anymore.

Can anyone fill me in, I will be getting a new gear set soon.

    Thanks,

The ones that are PROPERLY installed! You can buy the BEST gear....but if the Installer doesn't know what he is doing....it will be JUNK...no matter how GOOD it was out of the Box!

    Mw 11"

Trevor, if you are making a lot of power and can change, the Mark Williams 11" is holding up for us on a heavy ProMod. Everyone else we race with are running the 10" Tom's and having good luck unless shaking badly-Thanks! Jim

    Gears

    Hi Guys,

Sorry I should have been a bit more clear. We are sticking with the 9" MW Modular housing using a Strange Ultra center, while 10" Toms gear are a future option for now I am buying a center section from my buddy Chris (See mr. 8 run Chrisman above) and he is buying a new 9" 4.11 gear for me. I was just wondering if one brand is better than the other for life cycles assuming proper assembly. Once I have income and am certain the gear ratio is what I want I will invest in a 10" Toms unit for peace of mind and gear life. We still run the roots and weigh a bit less than the NHRA guys since we have no weight minimum so a 9" should get us by for a bit to start off with.

Maybe now that the VA got caught my next disability hearing will go better and I'll be able to finish this thing.

    Thanks again guys,
    Trevor Sherwood

I think it has a lot to do with set-up, maintenance, type of oil used, but yea. 58 runs on the set in the car right now.

    Ratio

We did the same process as you with a 9 inch Richmond on a pro extreme type car. We run a 4.86 and the only option is the 9.5 and the us gear was highly regarded by Toms. He said to reset the pinion depth after a race and then inspect it every 40 hits.
We had the 486 9 in set laying around so we used it. If I were buying a new set I'd just spend the 588.00 and get the 9.5 us gear set to start with.Saving 200 bucks in the drivetrain is not worth the risk imo.

    Gears

It sounds like the U.S. Gear is preferred over the Richmond. I would love to put a 9.5" gear in there but seeing as how I have just enough to get the 9" and Uncle Sam has continued to give me the shaft I have no choice but to be broke and deal with it. So far it has taken me 16 years and 2 tours in Iraq to get this close and I am almost out of stuff to sell to put it together so 9" it is.

Thanks again for the input guys,
    Trevor Sherwood

You can usually grind the case enough to fit the 9.5

US Gear is the way to go. Worth the wait to come up with some more money and get the 9.5 set up.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the "I don't have the money to buy the right part" deal almost always cost more. I can sympathize with you on trying to build what you can with what you got. I'm not saying a 9" won't work, especially with a converter, but you would be a lot better in the long run to go with the 9.5"

How about Motive? I'm not sure if they make any of the bigger stuff, but knock on wood, I've had good luck with my 9-inch 3.90. Although I'm not making the power you guys are talking about, I've shook it very hard more than once and it looked fine at last inspection.

    Gear set

    Hi Will,

Sadly it would be another 6 months to a year for me to get the extra cash for the gear set unless my Uncle Sam does the right thing and my disability finally gets approved in Septemberish (Not getting my hopes up anymore)

I really want the 9.5" to start but I just have no way of making it happen unless something else sells.

Thanks again for all of the advise Will and for the site, I hope all is well brother.

    Trev
