Would total timing be different depending on the strength of the Mag being used? For example, on a blown BBC combo I see most people mention 32 degrees of timing. I'm using a lowly Mag 12. Should I expect to need a couple more degrees of timing to offset the weaker mag as compared to using a Mag 44? Or is 32 degrees 32 degrees regardless?

Maybe I can rephrase the question: Does a weak spark require more timing than a strong spark?

We had a similar combo with a 44 mag and ran only 28-29 degrees. Lasted for several years. Got some bad advice and moved it up to 32 and kicked the rods out 2nd pass. I would start at around 27 and make a half track pass then check your plugs. Compare it to what you normally ran with the weak timing deal

I know some say it matters, but I'm at 31 degrees with a 7al2 at 14 over making 20 psi on my 584. If you look at the qualifying sheet from this weekend, I find it hard to believe I'm leaving much on the table.

The biggest thing that changes timing with mags is when they are loaded they retard. The purpose of the MSD Points Box is to compensate for that so the timing stays where you put it. You have to Becareful when talking to a guy that uses a non MSD mag because they will put 3-4 degrees more advance to compensate for this with understanding why. The answer to your question is that all those MSD mags having timing compensators in them so the timing would remain the same.
