BAE has the nicest one, no pics on his website but it's an extremely handy piece. It also does cam timing on both lobes, any cylinder you'd like. I don't like checking TDC with a dial indicator though, use a stop instead. Run the motor both directions til it hits the stop, equal distance between them is your zero.

Ditto what Brandon said -- you shouldn't do a location of true TDC with a indicator ---

    Finding TDC

Hi guys, can you explain what the typical difference between the 2 methods would be? I have never done a back to back comparison and would be interested to know. Thanks

Using a mech stop is preffered.

When you use a dial indicator, it can be off by x amount of degrees because of piston dwell. Dwell changes with stroke & rod length, so how long is your piston at TDC dwell? who knows. If you use a mech stop, you split the difference from both stopping points and you are at exact TDC.

I've always used a dial indicator, check the piston coming up to the same distance both ways, and split then difference.

That would work. I was referring to when you were looking at when it stopped at TDC. My bad.

I have found that the dial indicator method is within 1 degree.

    degree

    What's a degree amongst friends?

I don't know how much more accurate you can get than a mechanical stop. Of course if you push on the thing hard enough you can vary it slightly. I try to get it within a quarter degree. New style RCD pointer is pretty good too.

If you have an older style drop in pointer from RCD, I would recommend epoxying it in the holder to get rid of slack and movement.

I like to triple check it and if there is someone else in the shop have them come verify. TDC is kind of the cornerstone of the engine.
