What starter combo do you guys use?

I have a TCI flex plate, a MSD starter, a1/4" flexplate. When I install the starter it is engaged. Do I need to make and install a 1/2" shim between the starter and the block?

    Starter Engaged

Are you saying that the starter teeth are engaged even with the bendix/starter drive all the way back? If so, I would wonder if you have the right starter to begin with.

I found my problem. TCI uses a 1/2" shim between starter and flywheel.

You need to verify the the mesh is correct between the starter pinion gear and the starter ring. Use a straightened medium size paper clip as a feeler gauge and when I starter pinion tooth is directly down in the valley of two teeth on the ring there should be just enough room to slide that paper clip in under the pinion tooth
