I have problems with starting the engine, engine fires and then stops, fitted spare points box and engine started 3 times and ran fine 3 times with no issues. Tried to start again and same problem, engine fires and then stops. Looks like points box may be fried again.

Anyone know what could be causing the points box(s) to fault? No crank trigger used. 12v power direct from battery via relay and fuse and earth(ground) direct from battery. Have had no issues for 9 meetings until now.

How can you test the points box? Last one that I sent to MSD had a blown diode.

    Thanks

    Dave

What!! Relays fail all the time. Tire shake or just the nature of the beast. I had a relay brake on my fuel 2 step switch. Car would work fine in the pits not running then on starting line it would leave like the clutch was never down. A points box should have no fuses or relays. Direct wiring from mag kill switch to points box and battery. I found my relay was bad by having my crew guy hold volt meter to it and tap it with a screw driver. It was all over the place.

Sorry misled you here with relay. 12v supply to kill switch MSD solenoid via relay. I would like to know how to test a points box. I will take on board what you have said and remove the relay from the kill switch solenoid, I don't think this is the problem though.

The only thing you can do is to replace it with a known good. If it works then the old one is bad. I always swap back and see if it really didn't work. Then you will have to buy a new one or send it to MSD or Electrimotion for repair. Sometimes they can't be repaired. There is nothing we can fix at our level
