I ran Redline shockproof gear oil last year in a 9.5" Strange Toploader in a TAFC. I was going through things and thought I would look at the rear end and the gear oil had turned into a red jello/pudding looking kind of thing. Not as thick as jello but thicker than pudding. I have two questions- what happened and what should I use. It was about 35 degrees in the shop when I spooned it out. Dave Germain

    Gelled gear oil

I just realized something about the Torco Shock Proof that has gelled. I can't even pour into a jug to take it to the recycling place. It won't pour.......Dave Germain

Dave, did you use any type of assembly lube when you assembled the rear end? I had something like what your talking about with my Redline ShockProof. It had some deep red spots in it. I thought it may be because we had used a lube on the bearings last time we assembled it. All I did was strain it like normal and mix some new in with it and once it was mixed in a container the deep red spots mixed in and it looked normal. Also, this time I did not used anything but the Redline Shoockproof during assembly. We have used the Redline in every car we have owned and worked on and in my opinion its the best for the rear end.

Also, it was just about as cold in my shop (45 Degrees) when I seen this. However, ours was not jello like, but just different looking, the consistency was no different from normal.

we use a M/W Modular. 6 quarts of standard 90 wt. works the best! used the redline and the synergyn. theres no difference.

    Redline Shockproof

I had heard nothing but positive things from everybody about the shockproof. Thats why I put it in the rearend. We didn't use any assembly lube when we put it together. There isn't a vent on the rearend (no way for anything to get into it) It just became red jello. So thick that it wouldn't drain from the drain plug and it won't pour out of the pan I drained it into. I wish I knew what happened so I could prevent it and continue to use shockproof. By the way the rear gears looked great after 25 runs. Dave Germain

    Red Line

Back in the day when I was driving Harry Clack's TAFC, it had a 9.5" Top Loader in it. It had Red Line in it when we got the car. Over 2.5 years I put probably 80-100 runs on it. If you have ever seen a car I tune, sometimes they shake. In my younger days I was always trying to go from a 2.6 330 time to a 2.48 in one pass if you get my drift.

We never changed the oil or the gear in that car. We had a gearset ready to install one off season and when we pulled the cover, it looked so good we just left it in there.

    Made me a believer!

I tractor pull. Our pulls last from 12 to 15 seconds. I have used Red Line for about 6 years or so. I have never had an issue, except for one time when I forgot to put it in a Dana 80. To give you an idea of how hard we are on rear gears, at about 200 feet, the mini came to a stop and the rear would not move. The pinion bearing welded itself to the pinion shaft. In our runs of 300 feet or so, our rearends get too hot to touch. For what it is worth, I would recommend Red Line to anyone. JW

I think the quality of the gears nowadays is a big issue--- there are several good lubes out there - another thought is how much lube do you guys fill your units to ? I am using enough fluid to cover the top of the live axle ---------

    Ditto

I have tried several lubes to try and get good gear life, and Redline HD Shockproof has been the best for us. I also agree with 1" from the top. Mr Manzo ran his right there too!
