    Sprag eliminators

I have used them for several years and I love them. I got mine direct from Lenco. I have rolled new sprags and old sprags but I have never rolled one of the sprag eliminators. Once thing though is that you do have to change the spring in them periodically. I change mine every 6 runs. Some guys go longer. Dave Germain

Is there any down side to running sprag eliminators other than the spring issue?

I find it odd that the spring has to be changed out so often?? What's killing it? Wonder if the spring could be changed up or if a handfull of axial springs could be substituted in a radial fashion sort of like clutch base springs? How 'bout an air spring?

    Thanks.

I thinking like TOL ,, just wondering, Did lenco say to replace or check it that much? I always thought they would be better / stronger than a sprag but if I have to take the lenco apart every race to put a spring in it I wouldn't like that. why would you remove a sprag that will probably stay in there at least a season for something that would need servicing in 6 passes? we don't have a paid full time crew so our servicing time is valuable, and yes I have seen a sprag brake first race out but only once in 10 years most we will look at every time we have apart and replace only as needed, useally they last more than 1 season.

    eliminator

Looks to be really noisy in over run. At least the starter will unwind back into its shell!

Works just like a whirl-away in a v drive boat gearbox, but The springs last seemingly forever in the boat???
Never heard of having to replace them

    spring replacement

I was told by Lenco to replace the springs every 6-8 runs. I just chose to go with 6. They look like the springs that were on old time box spring mattresses. For some reason they just collaspe and get shorter. I truly don't mind replacing them because I think a guy should look into the transmission periodically anyways. We check the bearings and the pushrods frequently so why not the transmission? After zinging the motor to 11,000+ plus when a sprag lets go I would gladly change the spragless springs. A little bit of effort and 60$ is a lot cheaper than a set of connecting rods, a set of valve springs and who knows how many valves and pistons when the motor freewheels to 11K. I know that sprags should last a whole season but for some reason mine never did. Dave Germain
