Working on the winter refresh and while the pan was off I decided to figure out how much oil it holds and possibly adjust the level a bit. TFX Hemi. 6" deep rear 4" front, I was told fill it to 11 quarts from previous owner (dry, unfilled, empty filter). At 12 the level is right at the windage tray and at 14 the level is about 3/4 of an inch below the pan rail. Previous owner was 1/8 only, I will do some 1/4 for licensing next year. How much would you put in? It has a System One filter right off the oil pump (let me know if the quantity you recommend is including the filter or not)

Thanks in advance, by the way, my lamp stand is really nice ;)

Remember that a lot of the oil will be up in the engine, not in the pan, because it can't get back to the pan fast enough. I would run at least 14, my preference would be 16, especially since you have to fill the lines and filter too.

Is there any merit to drain back lines out of the valve covers? I have a pile of -12 hose and fittings. If so, where is best location in covers and pan?

    drainback

do a search and you'll find plenty of info on this topic. I spent a lot of time sorting out a chevy and a decent amount of time on a BAE and finally said screw it and copied a 3.60 adrl car setup. I just heard about BAE drilling additional oil returns in the block and heads. I'm calling them tomorrow.

    Drain Backs on a Hemi:

Ive been working with Sassy Racing on this subject with some single engine tractor pulling stuff and the best advice I will give you is that drain back lines will only return oil when the engine is NOT at full throttle.

The object is to get as much oil in the pan before the run starts, thus giving the best chance to keep the pick-up submerged. Once wide open, the crankcase blow- by will find its way to the valve cover breathers through the middle of the engine, cylinder head drain backs, and external drain backs.

We have built versions of valve cover and oil pan combinations that have worked well, and have customer data to show us this.
