Here is the story..got back several weeks ago from race but at race one coil went bad put on a spare and car ran good..so got home ordered 2 new coils put them on (all Mallory stuff mag 4's) running 2 mags went to start car and always start on 1 mag kill it then start on other mag if it starts on that one then we pull the other to lite it...just a way to make sure both are good, "one fired then tried the other it would not fire"..so having to new coils I was thinking maybe a dead mag..so we tried to fire the dead mag off the other coil and nothing.... so now neither mag will fire both dead..so took cap off checked points, looked good but still changed out the points put new points in spun over the motor and lots of fire on the points put it back together and still wont start..HELP..Dave

    wont fire

Firstly I assume that the new coils are identical to the old ones and the terminals etc are all the same. make sure you havent crossed the wires to the coil resulting in the 'live' wire being earthed. Check both coils for short circuits (and open circuits). The primary to earth should be low resistance ie: less than 10 ohms or so (sorry not familar with these colis) and the secondary should be in the order of several thousand ohms to earth. Are you checking for spark at the coil terminal? Do this to take the cap out of the equation. Check your kill switches to make sure they are not shorted (should be meg ohms to earth when open) and make sure all your earth straps are intact. Best of luck Graham

I had an issue with my SMV a while back and Spud Miller gave me a quick check. Just take the generator off the drive remove all the wires and put a plug into the coil wire. It makes it easy to test then because you get 8 sparks without much turning of the mag.

I just held the mag in my hand and turned it with a cordless drill and a socket attached to the bottom drive bolt. Just ground the plug, unground the coils and give it spin.

Look at the color of the spark, should be bright blue. Its a fast way to test coil and mag all in one shot. Just don't get near the plug or WOW. You can then start swapping coils and stuff in hope to narrow your problems.

    Hope this helps

    Coils

Hey Dave it wasn't the coil you got from me was it? If you need anymore Mallory stuff let me know I have a couple mags and coils left. Everything is used but had been freshened up since they were ran last, they have just been on the shelf since we went to 44's. Good luck and let me know if I can help.

several was to do it..we first fire on 1 mag the kill it as soon as it fires then fire on the other mag if it fires then bring both of the in, the reason for this is it will tell you if you have a dead mag or transformer if all is good then time one then the other myself I like to time one then shut off then the other it is what ever works best for you when I work on a fuel team we did them both, are you running a dunn air retard or anything? I also always buzz my mags in and most of the time when I put a light on them they are dead nut on..flaming river products make a good battery operated lite I think also Jim at good vibrations sells them also..hope this helps any questions call me anytime 620-249-5909
