Detonation

    What are all the different ways that detonation is watched/sensored?

    Such as:
    -knock sensor
    -cfm of blowby
    -watching the rod bearings

    Manifold bolts coming loose , caved in piston domes , bent wrist pins , egged out small end of rod .

    How about things that I can do without wrecking parts?

    Seems like examining the plugs has not been mentioned yet.........

    bearings

    if you are looking at an upper rod bearing as it makes a "U" shape, if you measure across the top of the "U", it will close this measurement up when it is detonating, even with a V style bearing. On a standard hemi bearing/crank anything below 2.497 or so is usually detonating or too many runs on that bearing.

    An old bearing will gradually over time close up even with a safe tune-up. Measuring a fresh set of bearings is the only way to truly know if it's detonation or runs.

    If a bearing is 2.497-2.503 or so, I will GENTLY expand it out a bit.

    I didn't dream this up, Tom Conway taught me this years ago. It's pretty damn reliable too. I can creep up on the timing and watch the bearings close up.
