Kind of a two part question.........

What exactly is the benefit of a splined hub (PSI or RCD) versus a conventional hub, other than easier on/off? Does it really keep the hub from dancing around on the crank when things get ugly up front?

What are the pros and cons of a behind the pulley crank bearing support deal integrated into the front cover, versus a front mount plate with stand-offs and bearing out front with a long snout hub to suit? No matter which way I'll have to fabricate for my deal as off the shelf parts do not exist. Just looking for thoughts or opinions one way or the other before I start.

    Thanks.

If you can't keep your crank hub from welding to the crank, the splined deal is a good fix. However, since we started using the high-strength crank bolt-washer combo and tourquing it to 400 pounds, that has not been a problem (Don't try this tourque with an RCD bolt). The top fuel cars beat every part to death, so the splined deal was made for them.

I have used both styles of crank support, and think they are close in effectiveness. Do they stopp 100% of the crank flex causted by the blower belt? No.
Do they help keep the crank straight and lengthen crank life? Yes, I believe they do.

    Good luck,
    Marty

Thanks Marty. Where do you source your washer & bolt?

If weights not an issue for you, why not both? Since you are fabricating everything from scratch, you can make the outboard portion removable if you feel that it's not helping or if you feel that it is a hassle changing belts and performing maintenance. I like options and being able to go different directions without having to start completly over. We got our front bolt from AJPE, I think Robert Rheel has some, RBS might have some also. If you get a chance give me a call, been busy lately, usually by the time I remember its too late.

Thanks, will call. Fighting issues with front clearance. Not a whole lot of room up front....
