How far is "too far" away from coil bind at max open on valve train?

Running Manley Nextech series valve springs. 410 lbs seat pressure at 2.300" and opening the valve 0.883" (this particular spring says coil bind happens at 1.18"). So I am approximately 0.185" to 0.207" when using a dial indicator, rolling the rocker arm to max lift, and then manually opening the valve to coil bind from there. Is this too far away from coil bind?

I think you should talk to Manley. Lots of springs can be run very close to bind and are done so deliberately. Call the manufacturer for the latest.

This is an Interesting topic. We have been doing a lot of midget racing and our particular motor package is relatively hard on the valve train so we have to watch every detail like a hawk. In talking with several guys who live and die by the spintron the closer to coil bind the springs are the happier they are. We have been running them right at .050 from coil bind. I do know of a motor that came out of the Roush circle track program that was right at .030 when another builder took it apart. I am curious to know what everyone's take on the subject is here?

I think you will hear 5 guys say run it to .050" or so from coil bind and 5 that say looser is fine if you talk to 10 different people. We had a valve train issue that I was double, triple, quadruple checking to try to find the reason for some broken rocker arms (I had run these springs on the 3rd season and never had an issue). I went to a "beefier" rocker arm and the rocker arm was held down slightly (held the valve slightly open) which caused a abnormal amount of lash and broke several rocker arms. When I originally posted this question I couldn't at the time find where my problem had started! This is definitely a interesting topic and one that has many opinions as well! Thanks everyone!
