BBC Split Pans

I was thinking about putting a split rail pan on my new blown alcohol BBC. Are they worth the extra $$$ just to be able to check the center mains? I would still have to pull the upper pan to check the front and rear main bearings. I was thinking the Moroso or Jeff Johnson split pan unless you guys have any better ideas? If not I was going to run a Dan Olson. I need the pan to fit a Donovan D-500 block that has a pan rail 3/8" wider than stock.

 

Yes do it. We ran one on our donovan block (both for sale) and it was great. never leaked we also had room to check front and rear

How do you check the rear main bearing with the upper pan on? Isn't the rear sealing surface part of the rear main cap? Do you want to sell your pan? Is it a Billet Fab pan?

 

I can get a new Olson pan built to my specs for $750 but a split pan from Jeff Johnson's is $1150. Is it worth the extra $$

I had a Johnson split pan on my SBC loved being able to check rods and all but the rear main. Can not recommend it enough

 

I think I'm going to go with the Jeff Johnson. I'm told they are slow but I think it will be worth the wait and $1150 I hope

save your money and put the least expensive steel 12 qt. pan you can find.plenty of room for on and off,and best of all when rods end up coming out you save about 800 bucks.yes it may not be as cool as a two piece,but saving money is.just my 2cents.thanks ita ....overthehill

 

I never said I was looking to buy the cheapest pan I've just been told a few horror stories about Billet Fabrication product and mostly service so I wanted to make sure it was worth the extra money and wait time

 

I have two spilt BBC pans from Jeff @ Billet Fab.

Both fit great and are easy to use.

First pan is for a Merlin pro block (stock placement of everything) and was purchased years ago before he moved to Spokane and was exactly what I ordered.

My later pan was a custom build for a deep skirt CN block, block was shipped to him, he built the pan and forwarded both to me. Pan was great but they did not put in all the proper bungs for oil temp sender and pan heater which I had to have a local guy add.

A friend of mine order a Ford Cleveland pan and they did the same thing to him by not putting some things were he wanted them.

As far as taking a long time to fill orders I did not experience that. The above Cleveland pan was on back order from Milodon for 7 months before we were told they only had half the orders needed to do a production run and would be another 6 months. Billet Fab built the pan and had it to us in 4 or 5 weeks.

The pans are strong and the welds are great, just make sure he knows what you want.

I ordered one of Billet Fabrications newest design wet sump pan. Talked to Jeff and couldn't be happier with my choice. Speaking to Jeff he said he had downsized his employees since the pinch in 2008 so he is limited on build time.

 

Hate to turn this into a infomercial, but Moroso invented the current style two-piece pan with Gene Fulton in 1996, so we have done a few.

Moroso has built a wide variety, and can definitly help you. Moroso has been posting oil pan contingency since 1973, so we also give to the racing community.
