Have any of you guys experienced transmission fluid in the air lines on your B&J's? This is a fresh rebuild back from Mike and even tho' he says it's nothing to worry about, it's the 1st time it has happened to me.

Also, what is the proper amount of fluid in each unit, forwards and reverse? This is a 3spd Big Boy

    Thanks for the help,
    Keith

    fluid in lines

the maximum in each section i would say would be 1 qt. I usually put 28 oz in each section and 12 in the reverser.

typically the oil in the shifter lines happens when you have a blown shift piston seal. a leading cause of this is firing the motor without the air bottle on or too low air pressure. Could have a bad regulator with not enough pressure to the shift piston. basically it is siphoning oil from the case into the line.

if the piston seal is ok, you should be able to unhook the lines and purge the oil out of the lines. if you have too much fluid it might do this, so you might be able to correct the fluid level.

    Thanks Will.
I had been putting in 1 full qt in the forward sections and 1/2 qt in the reverser. Never had a problem until it came back from Mike at the end of last year. We made 3 passes and put the car away for the winter, then we discovered the fluid in the air lines. Co2 pressure is at 1000psi in the bottle and 400psi to the buttons. Mike told me just to flip the tranny over and drain the excess and it should be fine. I'll put the 28oz and 12oz in and see what happens.

We had the same issue with fluid in the lines. I had a scratch (pretty deep) where the piston rides and fluid was going by there. also, once i had the same thing and no scratch.....that time i went to the next size larger o-ring on the inside and outside of the piston......fixed it. It will not cause a problem, just get a little fluid through the exhaust port. on the fluid, i use 3/4 .....3/4....and 1/2....seems to work fine.
