We are running aluminum rods in a blown BBC. Had a failure over the weekend and we are curious as to what the majority of you run as far as rods are concerned. Also, how often do you inspect the rods?

    Thanks in advance...

What are you doing with them (drag racing, tractor pulling, boat, etc) and what kind of RPM levels are we talking?

We run BME now, but for 30 years they came from Howards.

IMO, rods breaking usually are not the rods fault.

Which rod # broke (was it #8) and where did it break? (did the bolts pull out?)

You can measure both the bores to see if they are going out of shape.

For that combo you don't have to worry a whole lot about rods - if you want the best go with MGP. I have ran them all, paid for them all as well....I'll continue to pay for MGP's and wouldn't take any offers from any other mfgrs..

I run a 540 BBC, 14-71, PG Altered. I run BME rods with zero problems. There really isn't any inspection that can be done on an Aluminum rod. They work harden. About all you can do is watch the bearings. Bill Miller himself told me I should be able to get 100 passes as long as the engine is happy. You start knocking out burst panels, hitting the rev limiter, pounding bearings, etc. Rod life goes away fast. My next set will come from BME also.

I also run R&R's, haven't had a problem yet. 572" at 15lbs so I'd say similar power levels. I do turn mine to 8400 or so.
