blown bbc plug

    whats a good ngk starter plug for a 555 bbc, dart 345 heads, water in system, 12:1. were gonna start it with 32* and 10 psi. i was thinking ngk -8s or are they too hot.

    The center electrode in a blown alcohol plug should be as cold as you can get especially since you don't use it to read. Go with a R5671a-10 or -11.

    thanks mike, ive worked on tad, tafc, top fuel, and nitro funnies but this is my first personal blown ride. had to have something to feed the beast inside now that im not part of the carnage carnival anymore. your article on plug reading is spot on, i just wasnt sure since this thing is pretty low boost if a hotter plug wouldnt help it some.

    my chevy could run the 5671 or the 6061 hemi plug. The 6061 could run quite a bit leaner. I never compared the power, when I was on a good track I always ran the 6061.

    Depends on the ignition system you are running. MSD electronic, I would use a 5671-10. With a mag, you could run the 5671 are the 6061.

    msd, i dont feel the need to go mag until we plan on running more boost. this combination should never see more than 14-15 psi.

    So why do you think that the AFR in the chamber changes depending on the type of ignition system? I bet it doesn't.

    The only time you need to spend the money on a 6061 plug is if you are going to push the envelope. The main difference between a 6061 and a 5671 is the length of the ground strap. The cadmium on the base circle of the 5671 and the 6061 burn off at the same internal chamber temperature.

    The advantage of the longer ground strap on a 5671 is that you can see detonation starting sooner if you carefully watch the sharp squared off points of the ground strap start rounding off. When that happens on the 6061 short ground strap it is usually too late to save that cylinder.

    we will be running the 5671 for the long ground strap. i just dont feel the need for a mag on anything making less than 15 pounds. the msd should fire 10 or so pounds reasonably.

    I agree. Keep that plug gap at .015-.016".

    Mike would you use a 5671 in a screw bae at 60 psi if the tuneup kept good cad on the plugs?
    On my Chevy I could take a 5671 and clean all the cad off the face and it would start to get a little frosty white.
    Same tune with a 6061 it would have maybe 20 percent cad on the face which is what I like.
    I need to reduce costs per run and the 5671 is a good way to do it. I guess most people with screw hemis run them on kill so you don't see it often.

    if you can use them i have 48 new 5671a-9 plugs that i'll never use.

    The spark plug does not know what blower or the amount of boost or what ignition is being used. The only thing it knows is the temperature inside the combustion chambers that is a result of the AFR. With the plug tight in the hole the base circle of the threaded portion of the plug now becomes and extension of the head material that we can remove and look at. Like I said before the short strap of the 6061 plug is less likely to act like a glow plug if the AFR goes too lean or the ignition is too far advanced. With the fuel requirement of a screw blower there should be no reason to be 100% or more frosty. Even a roots blower doesn't need to be 100% frosty. Remember the plug reading is only what is happening in the motor at the end of the run and does not reflect the fuel curve earlier in the run. What I am saying is you can go too lean in first or second gear and have the plugs look ok at the end of the run.

    I know of at least one Pro-Extreme team that uses the 5671 plug. PSI-C with Hemi.

    I never said that! I can tell you that a blown alcohol BB Chevy with a MSD electronic ignition will make more power and run faster with a 5671 than a 6061. With a mag, I never found any difference in the performance of either. I'm no spark plug expert, but I have tried this on the dyno and on the track a few times. Same results every time.

    If the 5671 and the 6061 are gapped the same then what would the difference be?

    It would seem to me that the 6061 requires more energy to produce the same amout of spark in the chamber. Could be because the 5671 plug has a smaller electrode with less porcelain aroud it and a thinner ground strap. Like I said, not a plug expert and never looked for the difference. I know plenty people that have good success with the 5671 with engines like the OP was asking about. Just my experience with electronic ign. and blown alcohol. If someone has a MSD7 and 6061 plugs that works good for them, thats all good also.

    That is correct on that a smaller diameter center electrode doesn't need the spark power to jump the air gap as much as a large diameter electrode. Normally we are taking about real small diameter center electrodes such as on an Iridium plug. High voltage electricity jumps easier from sharp edges or sharp corners and the very small diameter center electrode presents a sharp corner to the spark. Having said that now go and take a close look at a 6061 plug from the side of the ground strap and you will see that because of the angle of the strap it runs closest to the center electrode from the sharp edge of the center electrode. Actually that sharp edge of the 6061 electrode is probably better than than slightly smaller diameter electrode of the 5671.

    Could just be that the longer electrode holds a little more heat, certainly easier to fire a warmer plug than a cold one. Warmer in temperature not heat range.

    I don't think it makes any difference to the spark as to what the temperature of the plug is. Cylinder pressure makes a difference as to how hard it is to jump the gap.
