tried to hook up a crank trigger. the wires were 2 inches short. I put in a msd jumper wire, 6ft, made the mistake of it being coiled. when i got to 5000 rpm it was fine, as it went up, the motor started to break up and loose horsepower. I then plugged into the mag trigger with the jumper wire. the motor ran fine. Which I would think eliminated the coiled jumper wire.
I then tried 2 other crank triggers, 3 total, they all broke up above 5300 rpm's
Has any one got any ideas?

How close is the wheel to the magnet. It should be really tight gap. Also take a screw drier and check all your magnets on the wheel to be sure the magnets are still strong. Also can you move the pickup mount 90 degrees to remount so you can get rid of that wire .

    magnets and pickup location.

I tried it from .030 to .070, never checked the magnets.
what i did have after i got through making shims, the wheel is .375 wide. The pickup is off center toward the front. I would say the entire pickup is over the wheel, but not centered. After thought, the magnet does not go all the way to the front of the wheel. so part of it could be over the aluminum in the wheel.

be aware the crank trigger does have a positive and negative wire. if they are backwards, all kinds of weird stuff happens. I would hook up a labscope and check the patterns out. might be something entirely unrelated. msd has good wiring diagrams on their website. make sure its centered first on the magnets. does it miss just on the distributor alone? dan

What controller are you using for timing on the 44? THANKS! Jim

It sounds like your crank trigger is not grounded. You need good RF shielded wires when you run a 44 mag. Leahy can fix you up with any length wire harness you need.
    Good luck, Joe

    jumper wire & interference

i do not understand why it had issues with the crank trigger and not with the trigger in the mag with the 6 jumper wire in it.

As previously said you need to check that the violet wire from the trigger goes through the extension to the points box violet wire and nobody accidently switched. Secondly you need to be using a shielded extension wire that has a ground wire from the shield to chassis ground and that the shield from the trigger cable is also grounded. Not using grounded shielded cables will cause a false trigger to be picked up by the points box from the high voltage spark. The is a very common problem and can destroy a motor. Also route that crank trigger cable away from any other cables.

My recommendation is to sell that trigger you have now and buy one from Dave Leahy with a custom length cable that eliminates that extension
