Sure some guys are,My younger brother included,
How ever when you do that the shorter rod is lighter
than the rest of them, so now you true the balance
out, if you make the other rods match the shorter ones
you risk that you made the small end weaker,
ever notices how many engines blow up during a run?
the rods are one of the critical parts to balance right,
when the rods start to shake they break
I know this because I had an engine balancer,
it was a Lemco, old school, no computer crap,
with dial indicators on each end of the journals,When
I finished balancing the crank the dial indicators
didn't move any more than .001 think about that
you have 3/4 thousands clearance in the crankshaft journals
if the crank is out more than that what do you think the
bearings are going to look like?
Every one thinks they can reinvent the wheel.
the guys that came up with the formula to balance a V8
engine knew what they were doing ! 50 % stock, 55% over 7.500 rpm.
    Just saying, Gene Terenzio Sr.

WE run short/ staggered rods in our dragster never had it lead to a bearing problem.

Why wouldnt they just move the wrist pin location in the same length rod to make balancing not a problem? Is piston/rod end clearance the issue with doing that? We ran short rods in a roots blower set up and never broke a rod in three years, but maintence and parts brotation had a lot to do with too....
