    Shortening and rethreading head studs

It is possible but IMO not practical. The type of steel used in these studs is quite hard (on the order of 60 rockwell, file hard). Conventional dies will not cut it well if at all (an old school Craftsmen high quality tap and die set would last long if at all). You will not likely find a machinest who will take on the job. Secondly, ARP studs (they make KBRE head studs) roll the threads into the studs thereby creating a U shape valley not a V notch as a die would. The V notch thread creates a stree riser that effectively weakens the stud by creating a sharp notch that is likely to propagate a crack creating failure of the stud. Best to trade for the studs needed or buy them outright. Hope this helps

    Shortening head studs

Yes, I had that thought after posting. If I were to do it I would shorten from the course thread (block) end. Just be aware it will be hard on threading tooling. I would shorten them with a cut off wheel (preferable wet) . Go slow and keep them below 400 degrees if possible.
