Our johnston pan sounds similiar and its a 10 qt, but I thought jeff said if in doubt fill it up to the windage tray and no more.

I understand "fill it up to the windage tray", but it's notorious that the big hemis with thick oil trap a lot of oil upstair during the run. So, it's not overfilled for long with some extra quarts in the pan ????

I would start with 12 quarts and check pressure late into the run. If it has a quick drop under power, add oil. I have run as much as 15 in a wet sump BB Chevy that have pretty slow drain back.

thanks;;yes i was having that with oil pressure not even running down track on just start-ups..would have 80psi on start but as soon as i tap thottle she would drop to 30psi;;i only put 9qts in pan with block mounted oil filter dry..was hopping low oil was the reason....going drop pan bottom and pull a main cap and 1 rod cap and check to see if i hurt bearings or not..sure hope i didn't
