I have the opportunity to get CG Composite injector hat for a very good price, BUT it doesn't have any holes for injector nozzles. Can carbon fiber be drilled and tapped easily or will it crack/damage things? I'm not even sure how they are done from new. Maybe an insert? I sent an email to DMPE but figure I would ask here also.

    Thanks

    Hat me

usually, in the bottom , a aluminum block is glued in and sealed with the carbon. the injectors are getting screwed into the aluminum, not carbon. this one might not have any aluminum to drill into. if that was the case, i would much rather make a spacer to put nozzles in, rather than try drilling. that stuff is super hard, and when u brake the crust at the top, the fiber below isnt usable for a taping dye. sometimes they put honeycomb under the carbon, and then your def screwed. i would imagine you could try and put a timesert in it, but seriously risky. most injector adapters have nozzle holes anyway, so i would try that first.

Thanks for the response, it looks like the injector in question has the aluminum block in it but was not drilled. I'm seriously thinking of just passing on this injector, its a bunch of money to spend on something that could be reduced to a worthless table ornament. I have never even seen a carbon fiber injector up close, so drilling on one, not willing to test my skills on this. I will stick to what I have now.

    Thanks

    carbon

Because of the extreme vacuum pressure the injector see's at the end of the run, carbon injectors have to be pretty tough.

I have put injector nozzles and air bleeds in several carbon hats with no issues.

Of course a boss would be better, but you should be able to drill and tap the carbon no problem.

Thanks Will, since I posted last I contacted Carlo from CG and he said the same thing you did. Don't be afraid to drill the injector, the aluminum strip is what you tap into, and just use extremely sharp high quality drill bits, go slow and sharpen them often.

    Looks like I'm online again.

    Thanks for the insight.

Last time I was at Les Davenport's shop they were drilling one. Just take it to him if your worried about it messing it up. They are reasonable and have all the stuff you need.
