    Distributor gear roll pin

What kind of things do you do to keep these from breaking or coming out?

Whats wrong when they continue to work themselves out?

Using a heat treated pin (Black in color)? If it is heat treated and they keep breaking? There is a problem at one end or the other of what the pin is linking together. I.E. Oil pump or distributor. If it works out all the time and the pins being installed are new? Then bore of whatever the pin is being installed in is worn out or to big or wrong size pin.

Yes they are black and they are spiral pins as opposed to roll pins.

They are working out enough to be only driving off of one side, IE they went from all the way through the gear to only about 2/3rds the way through. Once this happens they crack as they are now only in single shear vs double shear.

When we pound in new pins and they have resistence, this is what we call a "good fit" because I don't know how else to know? Do you know how to measure the diameter and what is good and what is bad?

PS The hole in the shaft and the holes in the gear line up nicely, according to my eye.

Have you tried the fit of the pin in the individual parts? If you feel resistance that could be just because of the bore of the gear and the bore in the shaft could be worn or the other way around.
Another option may be a bent shaft or excessive bearing play. That will probably show up if you check the backlash during a rotation of gear / cam.

    pin

I precision cut (hand grinder and a hand drill) down a hardware store punch to replace a pin at the track one time. It stayed in no problems until I sent it back to RCD after the season.

We used a BFH to insure a pressed fit.

    You hone the 3/16" bore?

I'm not familiar with how to do this, please explain.

To make it simple for instance if you want to pin fit a 3/16 pin use what they call a over under set of reamers so you would use a 3/16 under to pin fit it that way it will fit nice and tight with .000X amount of tollarance..also DO NOT drive the pin in with just a hammer you use what is called a roll pin punche. I always use my dake press to press the pin in..if you was to live close to me I would do it for you... I own a machine shop just for our own stuff if you are not in a big hurry ups it to me and I will be glad to do it.Dave

    roll pin with spiral lock

Put a roll pin in, with a spiral pin in the center, rather than just the spiral pin. It will make just about as solid of a pin as you can get.

Do some engines use a keyed connection between the bronze gear and the shaft?

To keep it from coming loose I always take a punch and stake the bronze in three positions at each end of the dowel hole and I have never had an issue .
