Water or foreign debris in the alcohol can make the fuel bad, is there anything else that can make it bad?

We are suspicious of our fuel, what things can be checked? We are not concerned about foreign debris as our filters are not catching anything.

Is there a chemical difference from supplier to supplier or is there only one methanol?

    bad fuel

i will say a friend of ours got some bad alky from the track fuel dump and the car would barely even run. this was out of sealed alky fuel containers. dont ask how long it took to figure out, either! supposibly the sg will change with water in it, but now if i think its bad, it gets used as weed killer! i can say i have a vp drum that sat for about 5 years and it was still good in the lined container. maybe a bad batch? i used to do the match test with gas to see how good it was, but with methanol doesnt seem to be as detectable. there is a grade a and a grade aa for methanol.

Do you have a video camera running when you do the match test? :D

    methanol

unless you are testing the specific gravity of the fuel, how do you know whether it has too much water in it?

methanol is anhydrous, meaning it READILY takes water out of the air or whereever it can get it. that's the big difference between buying VP or other high grade methanols and industrial methanol. for racing applications, it's important to limit the number of transfers from the original source to your drum, and ultimately your race car.

you will have to get or find a hydrometer kit to test the specific gravity.

methanol is a compound, so there are no different formulations between mfg's like race gas. the main difference is purity.
