How can you recognize a good ring from a worn one ? (except to mesure the ring gap)
Is there something to check on the surface ?

Also, some racers believe on a wider ring gap for the second ring and a tighter on the first, it goes backward to all I used to learn in the past about rings. What's best ?

    thanks for all advices

The second ring should be as wide as the top ring. This is to let the gases escape so it prevents ring flutter. Actually the ring can go bad and loose tension due to heat and still have a good gap. Life depends on what ring material is being used and how hot you get the temps and if you have bad detonation or not. You need to count runs and do regular leakdown tests and keep records. When the percent leakdown rolls off then it is time to change rings

Here is what I mesured on my used engine :

    first (Dykes) : 0.030"

    second : 0.022"

    for a 4.53" Bore

Do you advise to enlarge the second ring gap or let it like it is ?

    thanks

Run the second ring .010 more gap than the top ring.
