What would are how would the phasing on a 44 happen. Motor was sitting on 21 degree's and moved to 9 degree's everything was tight. Moved the timing back to 21 but the motor sounded sick and look like a hot dog roaster... Any help would be appreciated. Shipping the Mag off tomorrow

Do you have a crank trigger?

    Trigger

Hey Mike I unplugged the trigger and went straight to the mag and this happened after about 11 Passes. I always verify timing on the mag then plug into the trigger.

    Phasing

From what I understand from MSD there's a external phasing.

If you are not using the crank trigger then there is no operator adjustable rotor phasing. Not sure by your description what actually happened to the motor. Can jyou explain what actually happened. :

You have to push back and take the slack out of a mag as you phase it with a crank trigger.... or without. Make sure you hub TDC mark is correct...line up at desiered timing say 21deg. Then set rotor at number 1 terminal while hold back against rotation to take the slack out of the mag, tighten...then start motor on mag and verify timing, switch to crank trigger...start and check again with timing light. If it is now at 18 deg adjust to 21 deg by moving yourpickup and you should be right.

The msd guys said it wasn't possible , but a few years ago we had a similar issue that the timing went all the way back to nearly zero while the motor was idling. Changed the points box and it went back to normal

Jody it is highly recommended that you do NOT do manual rotor phasing with the motor off. You are asking for problems. It is far more accurate and safer to just unplug the crank trigger and run it off the mag first and to set the timing with the motor running and a timing light then to reconnect the crank trigger and to set the timing again. I am not saying that you can't do it your way but it can really screw you up if you do it wrong.

    Timing

I had already had 11 passes with no probs with the timing set at 21. The last pass I made, the car launched and at .85 sec the motor fell on its face I peddled it once and nothing was there. Came back in checked oil filter ran the valves and fired back up timing was sitting at 9.

That sounds like the mag generator slipped in it mount. How is the generator locked down?

Mike I only do it static to get me close, I fire it up and check both mag and trigger with the car running. I like to see the rotor lined up with no# 1 with the motor set at the pointer to the timing mark. Thanks.

glad to see this as a topic today !!!! i had an issue with knocking #2 and #6 rod bearings out last year almost every run but i didnt know much about phasing we had it out so bad that we had to start the motor on the mag and then change it to the pickup after it warmed up when we fixed this problem the rod bearing issue went away also now before the last race i changed the mag out just because and thought i had it phased right but then i pulled the bearings and guess what #2 and #6 was whiped out so i have two questions, will rotor phasing misfire bad enough to knock out bearings ? why do you need to set the mag first before you plug in the pickup ?

If you set the mag first at lets say 26* and then switch to the crank trigger and set it at the same 26* then the rotor will be phased right in. You have to do it that way around. The other way is to have an old mag cap and cut about a 3/8" hole with a Dremel tool just inside of number one post then with that cap on you can be on the crank trigger and turn the generator until the rotor is directly opposite number one post. If you want to make it easier then put a dab of paint on the middle of the rotor and a dab of point on the lip of the hole in alignment with the post. Now it is easy to see and align. That is how we did it with nitrous motors.

Remember changing the generator when on the crank trigger WILL NOT change the timing and will only change the rotor phasing. Sometimes if you are way out of phase and try to start while on the crank trigger the gap between the tip of the rotor and the cap post can be too great for the spark to jump so the car will not start.

what do you mean by directly oposite the post? we run 26* and take 15 out at the hit so where would this need to be aligned to compensate for the retard ?

If you set the mag and crank trigger at 26 you will find the rotor just approaching the terminal in the cap, with a wide rotor tip you should still be close on the opposite side at 15.
