I have a blown alky psi screw, conventional head BBC, with a msd 44 amp mag with a large cap, and my question is how fare can i retard my timing with a 6 shooter before i get in trouble and have to worry about the spark jumping to the wrong plug?

    thanks again Butch

    retard

With the big cap, you shouldn't have to worry about it. I'm sure you could get away with 20+ if you needed that much out. If you are going to run the car for a significant amount of time with a big retard in it, you may want to phase the mag half of the amount you are going to retard.

Let's say you are going to have 20 degrees out of it for 2.5 seconds (I don't know why you would, but for sake of numbers, we'll go with that). If you normally ran static timing of 26 degrees, then you would phase the mag in at 16 degrees so it would be half way between normal timing and full retard. I'm talking about the mag itself, not just adjusting the phasing of the cap.

I have never seen a blown alcohol application that used a big retard amount like that for a significant amount of time, so more than likely you will just set your mag up normally. Splitting the difference in the biggest retard amount and static timing is something some of the A/fuel and TF cars do.

    44 amp mag

Will, This is just what I was looking for!!!! I am just tring to control wheel speed at the hit, and then ram most or all the timing back in before 1.5 to 2.0 secends into the run, it is nice to know were the line is that you don't want to cross, and it sounds like 20 degrees is it.

Thanks again for all of the help!!! This web site rocks!!!!!

    Mechanical retard

Butch: another way to do it is by mechanical means, ie physically rotating the mag housing so that exact cap phasing is still maintained. Many of the mag drives out there (Dunn and others) provide this feature, or you could add this neat little unit to an existing setup: http://fuelinjectionent.com/webstore/product_info.php?products_id=189
