    starter power?

I have a blown sbc td. I found a used hh retro 8-71 that I had restripped. Spent friday and saturday trying to start msd digital 7. Finally the only thing different put the old 8-71 on and it started right up sunday at lunch(no racing). I saw were 250 rpm is minimum to start. The hh blower is so tight it takes a power bar and probably 200 lbs to turn. Is there a way to break it in or am I out in left field. 12 volt system tilton starter I put a second battery in line on saturday 'till the starter started to smoke.
    Thanks Steve

I dont know anything about hh retro blowers but that seems extremely tight for an 8-71... even with new strips.

You might want to start by taking the belt off and check the feel of the blower now, if it is still alot to pull with a 18 inch or so long bar then something isn't right.

Is your manifold true , flat ? You might try loosening up the blower case nuts slightly and see if the blower gets easier to turn------- what are you torquing the blower case nuts at ?

The blower is torqued to 15 lbs. I have a suspicion that the re builder doesn't have a lathe and it's just too tight. I was thinking You might suggest 16 volt and/or bigger starter or something I'm missing. I've had the 8-71 rebuilt before and it wasn't like this.
    Thanks Steve

Spray Prizm in it for initial lubrication.

I was thinking back to what Mark Leigh said and I agree. Take the belt off and try and turn the blower with a breaker bar. If it is real tight then loosen up the bolts holding the blower onto the intake manifold and check again. If it loosens up then the oring maybe to thick or the top of the manifold is warped or you didn't tighten the monifold down evenly.

I tried the prizm it didn't help, I called the rebuilder and he said to hose it down with wd 40. I can't turn it over on the bench with a bar I'll have to clamp it down( still tight off the motor). It was so tight I set the valves with the belt off for the first start up thinking the starter would be strong enough.
