Im switching to a dry sump oiling on my hemi. It took alittle work to cleanout the tank. My question is should I filter on the high pressure side of the pump or bypass that and just filter on the low side as the oil returns to the tank? Im using a system one canister filter. with only two options will see how this goes, lol.

I have the same setup. The fitting in the pan has a screen on it to avoid anything from going into the return side of the pump and the filter is on the pressure side before it goes into the engine.

We've always filtered the oil on it's way back to the tank. That way you're always keeping the tank clean, so in the case of an engine failure you don't have to clean the tank - you've already got enough to do to get ready for the next round if that happens.

We ran the System 1 cannister style filter for several years, and just last year with the new car switched to their in-line filter to save a little space, both work great.

also depends on who's oil pump you are runnig the p & p or rcd does not have enough pressure to filter inline going back to the tank per Steve Plueger

Thats the first time I heard about not enouh pressure to flow throgh the filter. Thanks for that input. The pump is sent to RCD and I will visit more with them later on.

News to me, we always had our P&P pump running this way - never really had an issue with not enough pressure. We run a System 1 dry sump pump now, but we only switched because we sold our motor with the pump, then came across a couple System 1 pumps at a good price. FYI, we're happy with the System 1 pump, as well as the P&P they both seem to perform well.

I spoke with paco at rcd. he stated that the low pressure return to the tank would cause a larger amount of oil areation than filtering thru the high pressure side. he also felt the fram paper filter was better to use than the system 1 screen; because of the areation. Im going to use my system1 filter. If I had the room I'd filter both hi & low sides.:p

iv used the rcd pump and the older P&P pump returning through a system 1 canister on the return side for years with zero issues and as said elsewhere you dont get a tank full of crap when something goes wrong

fabbed oil tanks on blower cars are damn near impossible to clean out as no chassis builders make them so they come apart like the proper oil tanks the N20 cars use,

up to you but i wouldnt do anythng else other than the return side

Do you guys that filter going back to the tank with a p & p pump do you drain the oil after every pass ? that was the problem I had we did not drop the pan every run so there was not enough oil in the tank for the next pass. So I talked to Steve Plueger of P & P pumps and he told me the pump was not designed to filter going back to the tank I think if I would have drained the oil and 50/50 it I would have been ok but I did not know I needed to do this so now new crank and all is good

Right or wrong I dont really know but its what we do. We use a 70micron system 1 filter between the pump and block (pressure side) and small Peterson prefilters on every pickup in the pan. I call them my pump savers, they have saved my pump from pieces of broken lifters.
