    Spragless Lenco

I have a spragless CS1. It has a ratcheting mechanism that looks like a spring loaded version of starter dogs for the blower starter. I had multiple failures of the regular sprags, even new ones. Since I changed over to the spragless version I have not had another problem. I am very happy with them. The only negative side is that you must replace the spring every 6-8 runs. But they are only 30$ so they are way cheaper than normal sprags and the valve springs, lifters, and connecting rods that get replaced when you roll a regular sprag. The initial cost is sizeable- 1200$ per section. I am sure if Lenco could reduce that cost they would sell a lot more of them. I have seen the CS2 spragless versions and they are very similar to the CS1 version. I love it but just wish the initial parts cost wasn't so steep. Dave Germain

Did Lenco have an air operated spragless design a few years back? I seem to vaguely recall a picture in their old catalogue. Maybe the air was the "spring" in that case?

    Air operated sprag

I believe the drag boat racers use a two speed lenco with a air operated sprag. It is fairly bulky looking so that is why it can only be done on a two speed without a reverser. Dave Germain

    From Lenco boat section,

The SRM-1 (Sprag replacement module) was developed as a direct update for our single or dual sprag assembly and provides the absolute highest level of reliability under the most severe conditions. This design employs a mechanical diode that utilizes air to assist in both the locked and released position. The LENCO SRM-1 has proved tremendously popular in the Top Alcohol and in Pro Mod ranks and will control up to 3000 HP.
