We have a W900 KW ex otr truck and want to use it to pull race trailer. Since it is only going to be used to haul personal race cars how should I tag it without anyone having a class a cdl? Or how can I go about doing this legally without getting busted. A friend told me to put a j tag on it and put not for hire but I think since it has air brakes you would still have to have a class a since it is technically a combination vehicle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, it is a recreational vehicle. I got air brakes on my motor home and don't need anything special here in Georgia. Some states require you to have a special license but a CDRL is not normally required. Maybe if you tell us what State you are licensed in then somebody familiar with that State can advise you better.

Im in TN. I can still put it back on the road as a commercial vehicle but insurance for a tractor trailer is around 7400 a year plus you got all the IFTA bs and USDOT bs. Will I have to install a genset on rear deck to make it a legit Toterhome?

check the web site fmsca it has all the info you need, I have been through this, if you use your racing for a deduction on your income tax it is considered a commercial operation. If you do not use it for income tax the exemption 390.3 in the fmsca spells out what you need to do.
If it is registered as a motor home and you use your racing as an income tax exemption it is considered commercial.
if you want more info let me know we can talk.

Will the trailer/ tractor need or be required to have a DOT inspection?

If you use the racing as a deduction on your taxes you will need a D.O.T. inspection on the truck and trailer.

A lot of people run all over the country without any problems. If you get stopped by the wrong person you will have a bad day. I know this first hand.

If you have any names or sponsor decals on your truck or trailer this will make it commercial.
The fmsca web site has all of the info.

Also, the RV requirements will vary from state to state. I retitled a Kenworth a few years ago in Colorado, and they had a list of 7 or 8 things, and the truck had to have atleast 5 of those things. These were a heating system, a cooling system, a way to cook, a generator, a toilet, etc. When I sold the truck, it went to California, and California required that the truck have a toilet to be an RV. I also heard that Texas was the same way. Be sure to check with your state.

    Toter

    This is accurate info.

Call your states DMV/DOT ASK THEM.

In Minnesota a trailer has to have certain items to qualify as an RV.

    Some do, Some don't.

Ask your states DMV/DOT, they have the answers.

I have a Class A unlimited CDL, I also keep a log book,

I can't wait for a MN Highway Patrol to pull me over,

licking his chops thinking he has a live one..............NOT!
