I recently got our car running and have had it out 2 times this month but with valve train issuse not sure on what the problem is.Our first problem was that we had was we were using the 7 degree bead loc lash loc system with ti retainers and the newer stlye double springs on entire set up and within one burnout and some idle time the retainers started to spread and pull the loc threw only on the exhaust side. We fixed that with putting 10 degree locs and retainers on the exhaust side and that seems to fix that so far but since then have broken 3 exh springs with no run time on them for the life of me can not figure out what i have done wrong. We set the springs up as manf sugg. with a installed height of 2.150 which gives us a taste over 500 on the seat and .070 from coil bind. The exhaust side are the only ones breaking? Was wondering if when i lost installed height from the the retainer spread that the springs got damaged? These are the small diameter doubles.Any suggestion would be app

I take that you still use a hight mic and check all your measurments before installing your springs? also seems to me that most of the time when a spring breaks is the fire up and warm up, since I have started to spray my valve train with prizm I have had no problems..hope this might help. prizm

dave are you oiling the valve train plus the prizm or just using the prizm before start up.

it is the same stuff we use in our blowers, before I fire the motor i spray the entire valve train with it It takes out a lot of the heat out of the springs also..Im not advetising my stuff on here but I do sell prizm.Dave

anytime you can take heat out it will save you
it is like when you drill something or if you are machining a part you use cutting fluids or oil to take the heat out, the prizm was always used to take heat out I use it alot when Im doing machine work, I've talke to the person that made the formula for this stuff and he told me it is a grat way to remove and take heat out, it will not boil or cook out this stuff stays on I always say if you don't like it I will send you your money back.Dave

    combo

What kind of combo is this on? Judging from the flat hood scoop in your avatar, turbo?

I have heard you have to have some pretty stout spring pressure on the exhaust on those because the exhaust valve always sees backpressure like the intake.

Your cam may be the culprit too. If you have some one-off profile with too much ramp speed, it will just reak havoc on valve train.

If it was just the valve springs alone I would say the heat deal has merit, but not after pulling retainers through in the burnout. You have some serious problem somewhere.

I'm not trying to insult you, but more than once I have seen racers incorrectly set install height. Please explain how you are setting them up.

Yes it is a turbo deal and to touch on the cam deal we tred to be conservative on ramp speed and used larger lifter wheels to help.On valvle spring height checking i dont do it personally but my engin builder does and if i remember the procedure correctly he uses a height mic with the retainer and loc we are using for that hole measures overall height then subtracts that number from desired install height and uses that much shim w cup?we measure seat pressure on a spring checker take it to whatever installed height is and read that number

    Broken springs

A few years ago I had a similar problem with breaking valve springs. Mine would break just warming the car at 2000 rpm idling to warm it up. I changed cams and it never broke another spring. Just some sort of weird harmonics in that cam. The second cam had almost the exact same specs but a little slower ramp and it worked. Dave Germain
