How much power can they handle. Have a 2300# door car with 600 cid BBC making 900 hp. The trans is a older CS-1 4 speed with fresh clutch pacs and 2.74 low. Injected motor now but will be stepping up to a blown 1500 hp after next year.Thanks.

The small sprags needed to be changed quiet often and they dont sell them anymore. I would guess that they are black and blue. The back one( on the reverser ) usually goes first and is the hardest to change to a big sprag because you have to machine the reverser case to move the reversers input shaft bearing back about a 1/4 " ( for the outer snap ring ) and you might also need a reverser shaft if your's doesn't have two grooves for the snap ring.

The older 7 lug gear sets won't take much more than 1000 hp for long either, it's been done ( they use to use them 2 speeds behind blown nitro funny's and dragsters till the middle 80's ) but they won't last forever.

Marty, Thanks for the info. Will probably try to sell this trans and look for a newer unit with large sprags. When i needed to go through the clutch pacs i had a hard time finding parts for it. Paul Cottoni back east apparently bought a lot of the older stuff from Lenco and was able to rebuild all my gear sets with new clutches and steels. If i find a newer reverser with the large sprage i might use it behind the injected motor but not the blown motor. Thanks.

    Marty,
How do you identify whether you have a small or large sprag tranny, any measurements?
    Thanks for any info.

I've got Paul's phone number on the wall. I've extanged gear ratios and got good parts from Paul.I've run the older gearsets in the front ones but I'de be afraid of and have seen them exploded in the back unit next to the reverser.

The small sprags have a snap ring in the outer race that holds the washer and sprag element in place and the inner race has a sholder on it so it only goes in from one direction. The big sprags thrust washers float between the sprag cover and the case that it bolts to and the inner race needs a washer over the intermediate or reverser shafts to keep it from sliding out the back.

There are three big sprags they're about $300 to $500 apeice they're all tuff. I haven't hurt or barely even worn anything in the lencos I've worked on since using the big sprags and the newer gearsets and cheap 5w/30 or 10w/40 in them.

It sounds like I may have the larger sprag then, because my inner race will go in either direction.........don't ask me how I know.......
