Has anyone successfully used a Mallory mag iv and a rpm data logger in a door car? with a tach adapter as opposed to the crank pickup that is suggested? any tips or ideas would be appreciated. i am going to shield the data logger in its own box and i am also going to shield all of the wiring in the front half of the car from the mag with an EMI protective loom, as well as lots of grounds.
    Thanks

I am setting up the same system in my Door car right now, and a few things Randy has told me is to shield the computer in a METAL box, not aluminum. Also, he said has only a 20% succes rate with the tach adapters. We are using a magnet in the crank hub he indicated he has almost 100% success with that method. Also its best to run the logger off a battery inside the shield box and not running off the cars battery. I'm using a small Bosch 12v lithium ion battery 1.3 Amp/hr out of a small drill driver as they are very small and light, plus you can get them anywhere. As well as the chargers.

Everything else sounds like its going to work great. Keep in mind, all the things I just told you are not tested yet, so they may fail badly, but from what Randy tells me all this works damn near every time.

Good Luck and come back often, I'm curious how your system will work as I have virtually the same set-up.

The cure for us was using steel wool around the thermocouples where they all come together at the " gathering " box or connection box.

The noise carries down the outside of the thermos and goes into the connection !

i talked to rpm and got the same info you gave Corey thanks i was just curious who may have run into issues and if there was a chance of it working through the tach adapter or should i be looking at getting rid of my Mallory mag and invest in MSD stuff? how about emi filters on the power wires to the data logger and in the tach wiring etc? we haven't wired the system in yet so i can place my stuff as far from the mag as possible. what about shielded loom? Thanks for any thoughts

I encased my logger in an aluminum box, then ran the cables from that box to the thermo gathering box in a shielded conduit. Then put the gathering box in an aluminum box. Still no good.

When I grounded the thermos to the aluminum box ( the aluminum boxes were grounded to the batt neg ) using the steel wool, all was good to go from then on.

Note: my logger is NOT a RPM, but, when I was chasing the problem, I had chatted with Randy for ideas, and Randy was more than happy to give me info and tried to help.

2nd note, I also tried the beads on the cables, in different combos and locations.

As far as EMi is concerened the only difference between an aluminum box and a steel box is that the steel is ferrous which means it is magnetic and would offer more of a shield to EMI. Regardless the box has to be ground to the chassis and all MSD boxes and data logger boxes also have to have ground wires to the box and to ground.

Also, DO NOT USE SOLID CORE IGNITION WIRES
