Guys, I need some help with my B&J 3 speed tranny. It's new to me, and since I do not know the gearing, I went to check it out. No matter which pod I activate it always has the same ratio, approx. 1.3:1. Event without ANY air (which should be low I assume).

Also, does anyone have a plumbing schematic for the air lines from the bottle, to the buttons and then to the shifter? Or can they possibly explain how to plumb it? I just want to be sure I've covered all the bases.

    Thanks,
    Keith

    Air to shifter

Not sure about your ratios but you need 400 lbs of air to shift the trans.

Yes, thank you. I'm using the same Co2 system from my 2 speed system. 400psi is what I have.

    shifting

Nothing trick to plumbing the shifter lines. Should come out through your 400 lb regulator, to the shifter, back to the trans.

A B&J won't shift if the intermediate plate with the sprag assembly (I don't know if thats the correct name) isn't lined up with the case. The air circuit has a hole that must line up with this plate or it can't apply the shift piston.

I think most B&Js are stamped TS on this plate and that needs to be lined up on top with the shifter line.

If you are trying to find the ratios by warming the car and looking at the engine to DS, sometimes with a B&J you have to rev it up and tug the brake a bit to 'feel' the shift. We bring the motor up to 4000 to do this.

If you don't notice a change of pitch in the motor of the shift and feel it in the car, chances are it's not shifting.

If it has a blown lip seal it won't shift either, but usually will be pissing fluid out the shifter lines.

I suppose if it has a busted sprag it wouldn't shift either.

    Will et all,

Thanks for the replies. I DID get ahold of Mike today and he said almost verbatim what you said Will
"If you are trying to find the ratios by warming the car and looking at the engine to DS, sometimes with a B&J you have to rev it up and tug the brake a bit to 'feel' the shift. We bring the motor up to 4000 to do this."

I'm just checking the ratios in my garage and rolling it over by hand, and Mike stated it cannot be checked that way. He told me to leave it in FORWARD and then rotate the output shaft backwards, then apply air, the output shaft should lock up, IT DOES. He say's most likely it's fine then. What confused me was, with my 2 speed B&J (older version) I could check the ratio 1.40 in low, then apply the air and it would go to 1:1 Just a different process with this one, that's all. I was afraid I plumbed the lines incorrectly and that was causing an issue. But all seems good. I'll now when I fire it up here in a few days.
