thinking of buying a newer/more dependable truck to tow with when i get car done and maybe do a little transporting a car now and then to help pay for truck...i'm wanting a chevy crew cab dually with a duramax//auto trans//2 wheel drive...my trailer is a open trailer with a 8'x8' room up front that i have gen set/tool box//fuel storage//compressor and so on in...trailer weight before i added storage room was 1700lbs.
what kind of true fuel milage can i expect from this truck or should i can with something else fot my tow truck?will not do a dodge so that is out of window completely..

I wouldn't buy anything new. They all have the exhaust filters and mileage sucks on all of the big three. If your stuck on the Chevy, I would get a 2002 or 2006 to early 2007 (before they installed the exhaust filter). I've been around alot of them and those are the years that seem to be the best. A friend of mine has 06. He gets around 11-12 with 26' inclosed trailer. I'm a die hard chevy man, but bought a 06 Dodge Mega-cab (Cummins Deisel). I get 10-13 mpg (at 75-80 mph) pulling a 40ft gooseneck with living quarters in the front. Also the crew loves the back seat area. rear seat recline. Just my 2

WOULD BE GOING with used..in the 2002-2006 range because of cost and payments..i have a 84 chevy crewcab with a cummins desial out of a bus in it.has the 2 ton 4-speed trans and a US gear vender over-under aux behind 4-speed and 3;55 gears;;pulling a 18' open car trailer with 2800lb car on it i would get 25mpg on the flats running 75mph;;;just it is very noisy in cab[can't hear radio over engine]has no AC was just thinking of more comfort on a trip;;looks like i may should just keep mine and see about installing AC and see if i can insulate the firewall to cut down on interior noise..it really gets old after a 100 miles or so..

That's some impressive milage you're getting. From what I've seen you won't touch that with any later model truck. I have heard of people making impressive claims to milage but I've never seen it. It makes me wonder if they even know how to check milage! lol From what I've seen if you want to tow faster than 65 mph with any type of enclosed trailer you'll be getting in the 6-10 mpg range. If you're willing stay at 65 mph or a little under you will usually pick-up 2-3 mpg from what I've seen.

yes it gets that..that's way i'm having hard time going to something else..just mine is so rough..needs a paint job..headliner fell out of it..with this engine it it very noisy inside cab..can't hear radio over engine..no AC;;and with the big clutch it's a pain holding clutch in at stop lights...with the mileage i get with my truck it is only pulling a open car trailer[1700lbs.]with a car on it that only weight is 2700lbs to 2900lbs] never pulled enclosed car trailer with it so don't know MPG pulling enclosed trailer..

You say your truck needs work. Well take the $30000 you would spend on a newer one, and put that into your truck. You will have everything you want or need. There is a friend of mine here in Great Falls, Mt, that puts Cummins motors in everything. Thats what he does for a living. Some of you may know him. TA/FC driver Kenny Kraus. He has put them in anything from a 59 Ford truck to Hummers to 08 Ford F-550's. That makes a nice pulling truck.
