I have a little 'play' money and i'm thinking of getting a camera for the car. I can't swing for the HD GoPro (330+), but i can do a regular GoPro 170 camera. Are these a good comprimise? I'd rather have the HD, but can't. Should i put off buying one or will the std camera still provide good footage? ANyone have any samples from a NON HD gopro?

    Thanks in advance!!!

We use "catch it cam" camera system. Most of the cost is the little remote camera. The recording device can be any small camcorder. We use very small sony units. The results and identical to anything you see on ESPN. Total cost was around $400.00.

    go pro

yes, i have bought them both. i tried the cheaper one first to see if i liked it. the sound was the most important thing to me, but in that area both cameras suck. there are others out there now that im looking into for that better sound quality. ive tried the gopro with/without case, all settings, and the sound just plain sucks in a drag car. dont be surprised when you hear it. here is a night shot with the cheap model , i mounted it on the roof http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKKWNRp_7Kc&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL as you can see the sound sucks and the quality isnt that good. heres another night shot with a hd camera http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-ahqQjKM-o which is real nice and sound quality is what im looking for. (this wasnt with the go pro, but gives u a idea of what it should look like) when u download the hd version, you can really tell the difference. almost seizes my computer up with the extra info. heres some more links to some vids with the non hd hero http://s918.photobucket.com/albums/ad26/nitrobandit1/tuscon oct 9 2010 western fuel altered/ and http://s918.photobucket.com/albums/ad26/nitrobandit1/barona 7 24 10 funny cars/#!cpZZ4QQtppZZ12 all the vids taken from the car perspectives are non hd go pro. just hit the videos with the play in the screen, those are videos

Though not the cheapest Stable Imaging is what we use and their system can sync with Racepak. We have two small onboard cameras that have billet chassis mounts. One is infared (it's aimed at ground/rear tires) and shoots very nicely in low/no light situations.

might check this other system out as well. They claim to be very good at motorsports applications especially low light conditions.

First you need to figure out what you want to use the camera for? I was looking for a long time to pick one up. The most important thing to me was to be able to play back in slow motion, not skip motion. So, just the other day I picked up a Samsung SC-HMX20C. Can record 300 fps… as for drag racing we need slow motion capability.

    Dumb to cameras

    Help...
I want to be able to watch the video in slow motion, is "FPS" the important number or is it "p"?

And what are good numbers to do so, is 30 FPS and 720p good enough?

Another mans noise is music to mine

the problem is, that for about the same money you can buy a real hand held camera with true hd quality and has better sound quality( i luv to crank the crap out of it and scare the neighbors!) . just have to make a rollbar mount and see what perspective of shooting you like. if the camera falls off and rolls down the track, the go pro would probably survive better than the hand held, but i always put a second safety on it, just in case. ( it has come loose before). a recent trip to the electronics store i see hand helds very cheap. the latest video camera from panasonic has true hd and 60fps, with the best motion dampening in the business. hdc-hs700 http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/camcorders/panasonic-hdc-hs700/10929.html getting anthing close to this soon will be a reality with cheap prices. this camera started out at 2k new, in less than a year went to 800.00! the tech will trickle down fast. you can get a basic one for the 2-300 dollar range and not feel bad about strapping it to the car, either. after buying both cameras, i would buy a cheap hand held first, and try it mostly because i like the better sound quality. all my u tube videos have horrid sound quality. i am unimpressed with the gopros sound, but the fisheye look the gopro has a widescreen perspective that has a wide range side to side in the picture. 720 is actually considered hd, but its really not. some false advertising in the gray area happens here. 30 fps is ok, but 60p is the new standard. obviously to see the difference you really need a new tv with hd to see the difference. a 13 inch black and white looks the same with videos. now heres a twist. if you want cheap high speed camera, casio has 1000 fps in a movie mode thats cheap ! http://www.casio.com/products/Cameras/EXILIM_High-Speed/ these are 300 dollar cameras! now as a comparison, the cameras that espn uses called mo starts at 50k and goes to 150k for a 2500 fps camera! so 300 dollars doesnt look that bad now! depends on what you want to shoot!
