When I put the timing light on my engine the timing mark is no where to be seen. If I turn the magneto slightly the engine will die. I have buzzed the mag in several times but still no results. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

What have you just done or changed on this motor? Could you time it before you did it? Is the degree wheel hub on correctly?

    Timing

Start from scratch and find TDC manually(pull #1 plug etc) and see if your balancer mark is where its supposted to be. If it is then set your advance in by turning the motor to where you want it, then buzz the mag. If its not where its supposed to be something has moved (balancer spun on crank or something) With a mag buzzer you should be able to set the timing without even firing the engine. Does the mag have an advance in it or locked out. Maybe the springs on the advance plate have broken and allowing the plate to rotate out of control.

    Hope this helps

    Bruce maybe onto something,...
Once earlier this year wanted to check my timing at the track and one of my fellow racers brought over his light and said I was at 48 degrees,..I said no way, my car would not have cranked over,.. long story short, borrowed another light and it was deadnuts 36 degrees were it was set 7 months prior.

put new batteries in your timing light, or borrow another one to compare.

When You said nothing when you tried to buzz the Mag?
Your not trying to buzz a MSD as it won't work.

    Just asking

the best luck i have had is with a cheap timing light. I have a couple of snap on digitals. One works, one doesnt. I happens to be the newer one that doesnt read correctly.

I wonder if you rotor phasing could be just sparking at the trailing edge of the cap contact...? Maybe someone else could give there thoughts on this.

What mag are you using? Is everything grounded?
