I searched but could not find a direct answer.

What is the correct procedure for checking bearing with calipers? I checked thickness but looks like I need to be checking width also. Is this procedure the same for mains and rods?

Thinknesses were all within a .001 of each other at bottom and sides.

I also only checked the cap bearing...should I check rod side as well?

    Thanks

if your checking the bearing for a problem i alwys check the top rod bearing and the bottom main bearings like to much timing lean detonation what ever i always check the center of the bearings for width you can see if it starts to smash out the sides and thickness a little squish out the side you can shave that off remic it and use it agian (a little squish )

how often do you change out your rods? Seems that pulling them down every run would shorten their cycle life? Do you cycle out rod bolts between swapping rods (how many times are they re-useable?)

I'm sure this is not the norm on this site, but I just check my bearings after a weekend of racing. I'm not rotating the earth with my BBC Altered deal but I do run in the 4.20's and hoping to get into the 4.0 area.

Here's the part I will get crucified for. I run steel rods and have had 6 of the 8 rods I originally started with in the same engine for 4 years. I have replaced pistons several times have heads welded up and blocks bored, but the rods rarely give me problems. Only when I nuke a piston so bad it bends the rod. I don't run every weekend but my rod bearings last about 20-30 runs before I chuck them in the trash. Mains go at least a year. I shift at 8,000 so that might be what is helping. I'm not recommending you do what I do. Just letting you know what is working for me.

    Measuring Bearings

I always measure the top width of all the top rod bearings and then compare it to the end width of the same bearing. I have noticed several thousands difference in width of bearings in the same sleeve. We do this on every run. And the bottom bearing of the mains once a day if we make more than one run. There are guys who check more stuff more often and others who check things less frequently. A lot depends on how hard you are running the car and how well the motor likes your tune-up.
