I used to run a th400,and commonly known is that they rob roughly 40 hp.Thats really irrelavant to me,but I have a few buddys that put down my Bruno/Lenco a bit cause it has alot more drag with all the clutch packs.Would the spag overrun in the one unit when in use? Whats your experience switching from the 400 to Lenco? Thanks.

A three speed Lenco only has two clutch packs and the first is locked out the first time you shift. A TH400 is actually spinning some main components in one direction then it spins it in another direction.

A lenco and B&J for that matter does have quite a bit more drag than a 400. The 400 clutch packs are applied internally inside the pack with oil pressure, where the other trans (lenco using a wedge) and ( B&J a piston) applies the pack pushing the assembly to the front of the trans, between the front brg. and the pressure plate brg. literaly trying to seperate the trans case. I know from experiance, when you leave the pressure on to the trans, it's harder to turn the motor over from the drag of the trans!

Would not the Lenco be harder to turn with the a clutch pack left engaged because of the gear ratio is changed so more effort required.

No disrespect but I know the oposite is true a turbo 400 is a **** to turn even by hand hand and both a lenco and a b&j you can turn easy by hand even in gear plus i can pick my lenco cs1 and the b&j but can hardly move let alone pick a turbo 400:cool:

JP- The reason a 400 turns hard by hand is that it has reverse. Like Mike said, in a 400 the foward clutches turn one way and the reverse -high clutch turns the opposite rotation in 1st gear. The friction of all the packs slipping is why it turns hard. if you notice when you turn the input shaft the opposite direction of the engine it is alot easier. The weight difference is the extra reverse clutches, bands, valve body, etc. I still think in high gear the lenco has a little bit more drag.

Thanks for the replies.I figure it takes more to turn a lenco, but it cant be much more.Nothing a blown alcohol motor would notice in ET.

N2O SBC removed t400 installed 4 speed Lenco with single plate clutch

picked up 50lb not much in a 3550 car
picked up a lot of ET and MPH (supper gas 9.90 car) nearly 0.5 (gear change probably more than drag) in the powerband longer with the extra gear (still can't see why some "old guys" insist on a PG in sportsmans classes)
