On my blown alcohol combo I was told 1200 degrees was the max. exhaust temperature before doing any damage. This weekend with a nostalgia fuel car I saw exhaust temps in the 1500 range and was told it could go as high as 2000 degrees before doing any damage. Both cars have the same computer systems with the same exhaust probe configurations. What gives

EGTs temps are dependent on ignition timing and fuel mixture. If you are way retarded the flame moves into the header and the EGTs go up. The normal alcohol EGTs temp is 1050 plus or minus 50. I would not go above 1100* unless you know what is going on it the motor and are reading the sparkplugs. The sparkplug tells no lies because it is colored by the temperature in the combustion chamber.

If someone is telling you that you can go to 1500* or 2000* without engine damage and they are not talking about a nitrous motor and are specifically talking about a methanol motor then I would stop taking advice from them because they are wrong.

It's just the manner of the fuel difference. Nitro burns much hotter and slower than alcohol and that has more to do with the EGT's than anything, i.e. the mix is still burning as its leaving the combustion chamber.

Thanks Justin. I kinda figured it had to do with the difference in the fuels and the way they burned.

we have seen temps above 1200 on our blown alcohol chevy , but that was running too fat and the fuel was getting hot in the header pipes , we were reading the plugs just like Mike told us to do , so we could figure this out.

A guy I know was continually fatening his tune up based on the EGTs , and not reading his plugs , he was getting slower and hotter EGTs.

Well I was writing my replay based on the fact that you said it was a blown alcohol combo in your original post. While I was writing it you posted the 85% nitro and that makes a difference. Forget what I had posted.

Thanks Mike. I am not going over 1200 degrees in my blown alcohol combo. I was just surprised that a nitro deal would run that much hotter.

    egt

that's why the nitro cars have to run inconel ex valves because of the heat.

    flow

**All things being the same, if you went from one set of heads to a better flowing set of heads, generally you can't get away with as high of an EGT.
