Is there a certain amount of endplay to have in the coupler?

Mine is a glide to a 9", and as I look at it I tend to think there should be some play to allow things to move around as the frame changes during a run.

    Thanks for any input.

with the car on the ground, you need to be able to reach in and slide the coupler back and forth freely. this is very important and needs to be right. i set my collars to let the coupler slide a little over 1/8". hope this helps

According to Bob "I'm just a welder" Meyer the T handle in your hand to tighten the lock ring is the right size. 3/16"

i have always had 1/8" play in the shaft so after you tighten down the collars slide the shaft back and forth 1/8" min.

Thanks guys. When I went to the track I didn't have time to ask, so I just did what seemed right and gave it a fat 1/8. Glad I got it right. You guys are the best.

Brian, I made the mistake of one day of not having any play in it and on the launch in a blown bbc rear motor car it spit the the ring and pinion and the case out on the ground. I knew rite away what I did but to late to worry about after the fact. They have to have some play as the chassis moves around a lot and something has to give. Jeff

    clearance

Start with a good 1/8 in. After the run check it. It will find its own clearance. Then write that down and set it up from there. Don
