Is there any advantage to coat the pistons on a KB Olds, 14:71 @ 20%
Does the thermal coating protect the thin material by the valve pocket ?
Don't want to start by burning pistons if I can do anything about it.

Yes, there is an advantage. You can go leaner without hurting the power and also it helps a bit on the durability of the piston. (But I have heard that when you get the deal way too lean, it just makes more expensive things for me to, er I mean, you to autograph and give to the kids. Cuz after it gets past Carl's coating, it just melts the aluminum all the same. -er, so I have heard.

Heres what i found we coated pistons on the side and top motor went lean and saw 1325 deg on the #1 hole the coating flaked on the piston and the valves and the skirt shrank .012 so we replaced it...... Went to tulsa the motor again went lean and saw 1400 plus deg piston with coating melted and it looked just like my buddies uncoated piston that melted almost exactly the same and they both melted down about the same time during the run so my opinion of coated pistons is it makes the piston more expensive and thats about it

Not to argue with the above, but when Ross was coating our, we DOUBLED the life of our pistons for very minimal cost. Won't run un-coated again....next::rolleyes:
